DigitalChalk: What is Game-Based Learning?

Game-based learning (GBL) is a type of game play that has defined learning outcomes. Generally, game-based learning is designed to balance subject matter with gameplay and the ability of the player to retain and apply that subject matter to the real world.

In other words, game-based learning is simply learning through games.

It’s important not to get game-based learning and gamification confused. Gamification does not use gaming in eLearning, but rather game mechanics and techniques to help motivate and engage students.

Although both concepts have the same end goal in mind, they use different concepts to reach that goal.

When should you use game-based learning?

  1. To promote critical and strategic thinking
  2. To build student engagement
  3. To repackage academic content
  4. To boost productivity and student loyalty
  5. To increase learning retention

What is the end goal?
The end goal of game-based learning (and gamification) is to solve a problem, motivate and engage, and promote learning using game-based thinking and techniques.

So, what do you think? Would you add game-based learning to your eLearning?
